The Art of Jewellery Storage: Protect Your Precious Pieces

How you store your jewellery is as important as how you wear it. From the right boxes to humidity control, we share secrets to keeping every piece in showroom condition.

The most lovingly purchased jewellery can deteriorate rapidly if stored incorrectly. Tarnishing, tangling, scratching, missing stones — the majority of these issues originate not from wear, but from poor storage. The good news: proper jewellery storage does not require expensive equipment. It requires the right approach.

The First Rule: Dry and Dark

Jewellery must be stored in a dry, cool, dark environment. Sunlight accelerates tarnishing in metal plating and fades coloured stones over time. Humidity introduces moisture that reacts with metal surfaces at the microscopic level, creating the oxidation film we see as tarnish. A closed drawer or box in a room-temperature space — away from the bathroom, kitchen, and windows — is ideal.

Choosing the Right Storage Solution

Anti-Tarnish Pouches

The simplest and most effective storage for individual pieces is an anti-tarnish zip pouch. These are lined with a fabric that actively absorbs sulphur compounds — the primary cause of silver and gold tarnishing — from the air inside the sealed pouch. Orviana ships every piece in an individual anti-tarnish pouch: retain and reuse these rather than discarding them.

Jewellery Boxes with Compartments

A good jewellery box provides individual compartments that prevent pieces from touching each other. Look for boxes lined with soft velvet or microfibre — these materials are gentle on metal surfaces and do not create static electricity that attracts dust. Avoid plastic-lined boxes; certain plastics off-gas chemicals that accelerate tarnishing.

Hanging Organisers for Necklaces

Necklaces stored in boxes or pouches together will inevitably tangle. A wall-mounted or door-hanging necklace organiser with individual hooks keeps chains separated and tangle-free. For anti-tarnish protection, keep a small anti-tarnish strip near the necklace storage area.

Humidity Control

If you live in a high-humidity climate (coastal areas, monsoon-prone regions), standard storage may not be sufficient. In these environments, keep a small silica gel packet inside each jewellery box or storage drawer. Silica gel actively absorbs moisture from the enclosed air, significantly reducing tarnish risk. Replace silica gel packets every 3–4 months or whenever they feel saturated (they change colour when spent).

  • Replace silica gel packets every 3–4 months in humid environments
  • Never store jewellery on open vanity displays in humid rooms
  • Use a dehumidifier in the room where jewellery is stored during monsoon season
  • Closed wooden boxes provide better humidity control than plastic containers
  • Avoid storing jewellery in the bathroom regardless of anti-tarnish treatment

Travel Storage

Travel is when jewellery is most vulnerable to damage. Invest in a dedicated travel jewellery case with a hard outer shell and cushioned internal compartments. Each piece should still be in its individual pouch inside the compartment. Never pack jewellery loose in a suitcase or carry-on where it can shift, tangle, or be compressed under other items.
